DIY - How to Make Pinwheel Cake Toppers

Learn how to create pinwheels using scrapbook paper. Use the pinwheels to decorate cupcakes, hang on walls or make mobiles for kid's rooms.

These pretty little pinwheels are easy to make and can be used to decorate parties, weddings or showers.

- ruler
- pencil
- cutting wheel or scissors
- scrapbook paper
- hot-glue gun
- toothpicks

Cut the paper to the diameter that you want the pinwheel to be. Use four to five sheets for one pinwheel. Stack the paper and fold it accordion style. If you are making multiple pinwheels, it looks great if you vary the fold width.

Staple, tape or hot glue the ends of each strip of paper together. The accordion will stand upright and look sort of like a lampshade.

Lay the creased paper down flat. This part can be very tricky. It many spring up and cause great frustration. This is by far the hardest step, but don't undo your nice accordion creases.

Insert a toothpick, dowel or straw into the flattened pinwheel. Hold it steady with one hand while you get your glue gun ready. On the backside of the pinwheel, in one of the accordion folds, put a big dollop of hot glue and insert the handle from the center point down so it sticks out of the pinwheel.

There are three ways to do this: 

- Make a smaller pinwheel to cover the hole.
- Cut a circle out of the same paper and glue it flat over the back of your pinwheel.
- Put extra glue on the center point of the pinwheel and adhere a tiny button.
